Perfect stage, Perfect time: Why Semenyo chose Manchester City at 26

For Antoine Semenyo, the move to Manchester City is not just the biggest step of his career, it is one he believes has come at exactly the right moment.

The 26-year-old Ghanaian winger completed a £65 million January switch from AFC Bournemouth after City activated his release clause, signing a five-and-a-half-year deal that runs until 2031.

But beyond the figures, Semenyo’s own words reveal why the timing of the move mattered as much as the destination.

“I have so much scope for improvement, so to be at this club, at this stage of my career, is perfect for me,” Semenyo said after completing his transfer.

That sense of readiness underpins City’s decision to move decisively. Semenyo arrives with Premier League experience, physical maturity and confidence built over recent seasons.

Yet he still with room to grow under Pep Guardiola, a combination City value highly. At 26, he is no longer a prospect, but not yet a finished product.

Semenyo has watched Guardiola’s City dominate English football for over a decade, and joining the champions represents the opportunity to test himself against the very standards he has long admired.

“They have set the highest of standards,” he said, pointing to the world-class players, facilities and the presence of “one of the greatest managers ever.”

The timing is also shaped by City’s immediate ambitions.

Still competing across four competitions, the Citizens are seeking fresh energy and attacking depth for the decisive months of the season. Semenyo believes he can contribute straight away, not simply blend into the squad.

“My best football is yet to come,” he added. “And City are in a great position… I really feel I can help them have a strong second half of the season.”

That belief could be tested quickly, with Semenyo in contention to make his debut in Tuesday’s Carabao Cup semi-final first leg against Newcastle.

A fast introduction would underline City’s view that this is a signing for the present as much as the future.

For Semenyo, the Etihad now represents the perfect stage, a club built on excellence, expectation and relentless competition.

And at 26, he is convinced the moment has arrived to show he belongs there.
