Opposed to the European Super League project, the president of Paris Saint-Germain Nasser Al-Khelaïfi tackled his Real Madrid counterpart Florentino Pérez.
“Don’t use their big names to justify your failures”
Florentino Pérez is a Super League follower. To justify the interest of setting up this new European competition which will supplant the current Champions League, the president of Real Madrid explained that it would allow more regular clashes between the best clubs of the Old Continent, at the image of the example of tennis tournaments and the usual oppositions between the two stars of the little yellow ball Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer. “(Rafael) Nadal and (Roger) Federer have played 40 times (against each other) over the years, Nadal and (Novak) Djokovic? (…) If the rules of football were extrapolated to other sports, we would hardly have seen Nadal and Federer three times in all these years.”
UEFA still says no
This exit from the boss of the White House was not to the taste of Nasser Al-Khelaïfi. As part of a speech delivered this Wednesday as president of the European Club Association, the president of Paris Saint-Germain tackled Florentino Pérez. “For Nadal and Federer, every game was important, regardless of the classification they were playing against. They never asked for a closed league of top players. They stood up for the tennis family. Please don’t use their big names to justify your failures.”
In a statement, UEFA confirmed its position on the Super League. The European body chaired by Aleksander Ceferin continues to oppose the project. “In line with the unity of European football, UEFA and football stakeholders have once again unanimously rejected the logic behind projects such as the ESL during the discussion of ‘today. Participants took note, with surprise, of claims by the CEO of A22 Sports that this company does not represent any club in any capacity, including the three clubs that continue to openly support the project.
