Over 500 applications for Black Stars coaching job overlooked by Ghana FA

The Ghana Football Association has reportedly turned down applications for the vacant coaching job.

The Black Stars are currently without a substantive coach following the sacking of Chris Hughton and his technical team after an unimpressive performance at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, where Ivory Coast emerged as winners.

Ghana suffered an early AFCON setback after failing to seal qualification to the knockout stage of the continental showpiece. The West Africa powerhouse drew two games at the Nations Cup, finishing in third place in Group B, behind Cape Verde and Egypt.

The GFA has since formed a committee, led by Vice President Mark Addo, to identify and appoint a suitable candidate for the role.

The committee is looking for a coach who is a proven winner, aligned with Ghana’s football DNA and possesses a coaching philosophy that resonates with the national team’s ethos.

The search for a new coach attracted over 600 applications from coaches around the world.

But according to Kumasi-based Kessben FM monitored, the Ghana FA has overlooked the applications received and will now go on a headhunt basis to appoint a new coach for the Black Stars.

Coaches who applied for the vacant Black Stars job reportedly failed to meet the requirement of the FA.

The Ghana FA has now open talks with South Africa coach Hugo Broos, former Gambia trainer Tom Saintfiet and Otto Addo to take over the Black Stars.

Hugo Broos is currently under contract with the South Africa Football Association.

Meanwhile, Tom Saintfiet is currently unattached after resigning from his role following Gambia’s elimination from the AFCON 2023 group stage.

Otto Addo, who is reportedly leading the race to become the next Black Stars coach is currently weighing up his options.
