Ibrahim Tanko technical director of Accra Lions has stated that the Ghana Premier League will stay the same if clubs don’t solve the poor financial packages given to players.
The Ghana Premier League’s biggest issue has been player exodus, with the best players leaving Ghana to play for clubs abroad, usually in search of better opportunities.
In the current off-season, clubs have begun announcing the departure of players, Mudasiru Salifu has joined Moldovan giants FC Sheriff Tiraspol on loan, Asante Kotoko’s top marksman Etouga Mbella is reportedly on his way out, and Augustine Okrah is now with Tanzanian club Simba. More will follow in the coming days.
Speaking to Starr FM Coach Tanko said the league is not competitive because of mass player exodus after every season.
“After every season our best players leave,”
“You can cite Shafiq, Lomotey, Diawusi Taylor, Augustine Okra, and Yaw Annor as examples. It’s very difficult to convince them to stay because what they are going to earn there is more than what they are earning here,” he added.
“That’s why we don’t have a competitive league every season,”
“If we can’t keep the players because of the financial situation then definitely our league will stay the same because our best players are always leaving,” he concluded.
