Black Stars head coach Otto Addo has explained his decision to make Benjamin Asare Ghana’s number one goalkeeper, stressing that the Hearts of Oak shot-stopper earned his place purely on merit and consistency.
Asare played a key role in Ghana’s 2026 FIFA World Cup qualification, keeping multiple clean sheets and showing composure throughout the campaign. However, some fans have questioned whether he was truly tested in those matches.
Speaking to Metro TV, Addo made it clear that his selections are guided strictly by performance.
“Every decision is based on performance,” Addo said. “Benjamin Asare has proven himself to be number one for the team.”
The 33-year-old has impressed the technical team with his reflexes, agility, and calmness under pressure, earning Addo’s full confidence heading into next year’s World Cup, which will be hosted across the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
Asare’s rise marks a proud moment for local football, as he becomes one of the few home-based players to cement a starting role for the Black Stars on the global stage.
