Otto Addo becomes second Ghana player to coach Black Stars at World Cup – Ghana Latest Football News, Live Scores, Results

Otto Addo will join Kwesi Appiah as the only former Ghana players to coach the team at the FIFA World Cup after it was confirmed he will coach of the Black Stars at the tournament in Qatar.

The Borussia Dortmund talent development coach, as reported earlier by GHANASoccernet.com, revealed the club has agreed to allow him lead the national team for the upcoming AFCON qualifiers and the World Cup later this year.

The 46-year-old led the Black Stars to make a return to the global showpiece after a playoff success against the Super Eagles of Nigeria in March.

He thus becomes the first Ghana player to play and also coach the Black Stars at the World Cup.

Otto Addo was a member of the Black Stars team that first played at the global showpiece in Germany 2006, making two appearances as Ghana reached the last 16.

“I got permission from Dortmund. Under certain conditions, it works out that I can do the international game phases in June, September and also the World Cup,” Addo said in a podcast of Hamburger Abendblatt.

The GFA is set to hand the ex-Dortmund player a deal that will see him lead the Black Stars in the FACON 2023 qualifiers as well as the FIFA World Cup in Qatar. He will also be in charge of the team if Ghana qualifies for the Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast.
