Former Ghana assistant coach Ignatius Osei-Fosu has raised doubts over the necessity of including Andre Ayew in the squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Osei-Fosu suggested it may be time for Ayew to step aside and allow younger players to take the mantle.
He also encouraged Ayew to focus on club football.
“Dede himself should let it go and then focus on his club football,” he told Luv FM.
“He might be a very, very good player but you ask yourself in this current setup, is he needed?”
He added, “Is he needed? For me, No. Dede is my man, but for me you leave when the applause is high.”
Ayew, 34, has only started three matches since joining NAC Breda in January after nearly a year as a free agent.
Despite limited playtime, he remains one of Ghana’s most decorated footballers, having participated in four World Cups.
Osei-Fosu stressed that national team selections should focus on current team needs rather than past reputation.
“That’s why I like these white people,” he said, referencing players like Totti who prioritized club football over national duty.”
