Member of Parliament for the Old Tafo Constituency, Vincent Ekow Assafuah, has delivered a stinging assessment of the Ghana Premier League, describing it as one of the most unattractive leagues on the African continent.
Assafuah made the remarks on the floor of Ghana’s Parliament during debates on the Ghana Sports Fund Bill, which was later passed after completing the Consideration Stage and receiving approval from the House.
Addressing the broader issue of sports development and financing, the Old Tafo MP who also serves as the Ranking Member of the Parliamentary Select Committee on Sports pointed to inadequate funding as the key factor behind the declining appeal of Ghana’s top-flight league.
“It is clear that in our country, when it comes to resources that are supposed to be used to fund our sporting activities, we have a huge challenge,” Assafuah said. “If you look at the Ghana Premier League today, it is one of the most unattractive sporting activities even in Africa.”
He argued that the league’s dwindling appeal is directly linked to the lack of financial support needed to sustain clubs, improve infrastructure and motivate players.
“The growing unattractiveness is because of lack of funding,” he added. “The funding that is supposed to be available to boost morale in the Ghana Premier League is simply not there. That is why we believe the Sports Fund must be passed urgently.”
The passage of the Ghana Sports Fund Bill is expected to create a dedicated financing structure to support sports development across the country, with stakeholders hopeful it could help revive domestic competitions, including the Premier League.
Meanwhile, on the pitch, Aduana FC currently lead the Ghana Premier League standings ahead of this weekend’s round of matches, as clubs continue to battle both on and off the field.
