Head coach of Ghana’s U-17 side, Dr. Prosper Narteh Ogum, has revealed that the per diem paid to players and technical staff during the WAFU Zone B U-17 Championship came from the Ghana Football Association (GFA), not the Ministry of Youth and Sports.
The clarification follows ongoing public discussions about how national teams are financed and motivated during international tournaments.
Speaking on Asempa FM, Dr. Ogum explained that the GFA took the initiative to reward the Black Starlets for their impressive performance at the regional tournament, where Ghana finished as runners-up after losing to Côte d’Ivoire on penalties.
“The per diem for the team did not come from the Sports Ministry. It came from the Ghana Football Association,” he disclosed.
He added that he confirmed the information directly from the team’s management committee chairman.
“I personally asked the chairman of the team and he told me it is from the FA ; they wanted to appreciate us for our performance. Everyone was happy with it,” Ogum said.
The coach also expressed confidence that the Ministry would eventually honour its financial commitments to the team.
“I’m sure that of the Ministry will also come,” he added.
Dr. Ogum’s remarks shed light on the GFA’s proactive role in supporting the next generation of Ghanaian footballers following their spirited run in the WAFU Zone B competition.
