Former Ghana Football Association president Kwesi Nyantakyi has disclosed that he was on course to rise to the highest office in African football before stepping away from administration in 2018.
He resigned from his roles at the GFA, CAF and FIFA in June 2018 after corruption allegations brought his long administrative career to an abrupt end.
Speaking on Joy News on Tuesday, January 6, he explained that his standing within CAF placed him in a strong position to succeed the sitting president.
“At the time I exited CAF and football, I was the first vice president of the federation,” Nyantakyi stated.
He further stressed that he was the “next most senior football official on the continent of Africa,” making the possibility of a CAF presidency realistic.
Nyantakyi believes his departure closed a rare chapter for Ghanaian football leadership at the continental level.
“So, Ghana would have had a CAF president,” he said, reflecting on what could have been achieved.
“Although it is still possible… anybody who works hard can be the president,” Nyantakyi added.
