Director General of the National Sports Authority (NSA), Yaw Ampofo Ankrah, has called for immediate and sustained efforts to restore the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi to its full glory.
Speaking on Oyerepa FM, Ampofo Ankrah stressed the historical and national significance of the stadium.
“It’s more than just a venue. It belongs to all;Asante Kotoko, the Black Stars, and it hosts many national events,” he said.
He acknowledged that attention had initially shifted to Accra due to World Cup qualifiers but affirmed that now is the time to prioritize Kumasi.
Green Grass Technology, the firm tasked with renovating the pitch, has reportedly requested a six-to-twelve-week window to complete the work. However, the NSA boss believes it could be done even faster.
“We can finish in under six weeks if we act now, with full funding, water, fertilizers, and logistics,” he explained.
Ampofo Ankrah revealed that the NSA had proposed the University of Ghana Stadium as an alternative venue, but the decision was made to stick with Kumasi.
He added that the pitch could be ready between September 20 and 27 if work begins immediately, and urged long-term investment to prevent future deterioration.
