Member of Parliament for Old Tafo, Vincent Ekow Assafuah, has credited the Black Queens’ impressive run at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) to the groundwork laid by the previous New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration.
The Black Queens reached the semi-finals of the ongoing tournament in Morocco after edging past Algeria 4-2 in a penalty shootout on Saturday.
Ghana will now face hosts Morocco on Tuesday, July 22, as they continue their pursuit of a maiden WAFCON title.

While the nation celebrates the team’s progress, the Ranking Member of Parliament’s Select Committee on Sports believes part of the credit belongs to past policies aimed at reviving women’s football.
“Beyond the celebration of this victory lies the story of resilience and long-term investments and sustained commitment, particularly in the often underappreciated area of women’s football,” Assafuah stated.
“While recent support must be acknowledged, this achievement is undeniably built on the foundation laid by the previous New Patriotic Party’s government.”
He further emphasized that the NPP took deliberate steps to reposition women’s sports as a national priority.
“It was under the leadership of the NPP that we witnessed the revamping of the women’s league through structured funding and logistical backing,” he added.
