Nora Häuptle in, Mercy Tagoe out as Black Queens coach

Nora Häuptle has been appointed the new head coach job of the Ghana women’s senior national team, the Black Queens.

This comes six months after the 39-year-old Swiss was made the Technical Advisor for the Black Princesses prior to their participation at the Costa Rica 2022 Fifa U-20 Women’s World Cup.

Nora is an ex-footballer who played for BSC Young Boys, FFC Zuchwil 05, FC Twente Enschade, FC Thun and the Swiss national team between 1996 and 2010.

The former Swiss Football Association Instructor holds a Uefa Pro coaching license and has worked as head coach of the Israel women’s national team.

Taking up the job on a two-year contract in November 2021 as head coach and the first-ever technical director of women’s football in the Asian country, Nora resigned from the dual roles only a few weeks later.

In July 2022, Nora accepted a short-term role with Ghana’s U-20 female side.

She also coached the women’s U-19s for her country from 2015 until 2020 after which she took up the coaching job at German women’s side Bundesliga SC Sand where she lasted for 8 months.

Now Nora – who is already in Accra – has been trusted with the Black Queens job, replacing Mercy Tagoe-Quarcoo who had been in charge since 2019.

She will have Joyce Boatey-Agyei and Aboagye Dacosta as assistant coaches.

Boatey–Agyei is a physical Education Tutor and Coach at Kumasi Girls Senior High School. She, until recently, held the position of coach of Ghana’s U-15 national team.

Dacosta is an ex-Asante Kotoko player and head coach of Kumasi-based Women’s Premier League Club Ashtown Ladies.

The Black Queens will be busy this year competing in the third edition of the Wafu Zone-B Women’s Cup of Nations and the qualifiers for Morocco 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon).
