The Director General of the National Sports Authority (NSA), Yaw Ampofo Ankrah, has made it clear that Jamaican dancehall star Vybz Kartel will not be allowed to hold a concert at the Accra Sports Stadium unless organisers provide a proper pitch cover.
Speaking on Sporty FM, Ampofo Ankrah explained that the stadium is currently undergoing partial renovations, with some seating areas cordoned off, and stressed the importance of protecting the venue’s playing surface, which is key to hosting international matches.
“If you look at the stages they mount and the kind of setup he needs to match his energy, we can’t restrict him. But how do we give him that space when we haven’t protected our pitch?” he said.
He warned that allowing such a large-scale show without safeguards could destroy the pitch.
“Otherwise, I might as well write my resignation letter. December 31st is not worth destroying the pitch,” he added.
Kartel’s management has reportedly shown interest in using the stadium as part of his planned world tour in December. While Ampofo Ankrah acknowledged the cultural and tourism value the event could bring, he insisted that infrastructure must come first.
“It’s beyond music. It’s a whole statement ; a music renaissance, Ghana’s creative appeal, and Kartel’s own redemption story as a born-again Rastafarian,” he said.
