Ghana Premier League side New Edubiase United have revealed they allowed former Ghana youth star Bernard Don Bortey to join Equatoria Guinean side Panthers FC for free.
Bortey joined Panthers in December with two years left on his contract with Ghana Premier League side Edubiase.
But contrary to reports suggesting Edubiase coup over $100,000 from his switch, club President Abdul Sallam Yakubu has revealed the Movers were charitable enough to allow Bortey leave for free.
“Considering how Don Bortey has served Ghana football (his contribution to national teams and clubs) we decided to let him go for free,” he explained on Accra-based Asempa FM.
“Panthers came in with no offer on the table but wanted the player so we looked at the interest of Bortey first and decided to release him to the club.”
The former Ghana U17, U20 and U23 star who was also capped over 10 times by Ghana at senior level played in the second-leg tie of the CAF Confederations Cup for Panthers when they lost 2-0 to Medeama SC and exited the competition.
Bortey made his name at Hearts of Oak during his five season spell at the club which saw him win four Ghana Premier League titles and a Golden Shoe Award.
