New deal in hand, Patrick Nyarko ready to get Fire started

Ghana striker Patrick Nyarko’s contract extension is not just a vote of confidence. It’s also motivation for him to help restore Chicago Fire’s winning ways.

“It’s very heartwarming to know that you’re wanted by an organization,” Nyarko, a 26-year-old native of Ghana, said on Friday after agreeing to terms this week.

“I love this city and love this organization … and want to get back to a winning tradition.”

Nyarko, who was in the final year of his previous deal, said the Fire initiated talks, and the parties came to terms on a two-year contract with a team option for a third.

The new deal took effect this week, guaranteeing that the speedy striker will remain in Chicago through 2013 and possibly 2014.

“One of my main decisions about staying here is (that) it’s all about winning, and this organization is committed to that,” Nyarko said.

“I want to win a championship here and do something special for this organization.”

Financial terms were not disclosed.

In a 2011 survey published by the Major League Soccer Players Union, Nyarko made a $110,000 base salary and was guaranteed $190,000.

Now in his fifth season with the Fire, Nyarko played in 30 games last year and had a goal and nine assists while crafting a successful front-line partnership with Dominic Oduro.

He has played every minute of the Fire’s first three games this season.

Nyarko wasn’t sure if he would play Saturday against the University of Louisville in a friendly at Toyota Park.
