Nations FC defender Razak Simpson rewarded with Black stars call up after stellar GPL season

Nations FC captain and defensive linchpin Razak Simpson has once again caught the eye of Black Stars head coach Otto Addo, securing a well-deserved call-up to the Ghana national team for the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Chad and Madagascar.

This marks a return to the national fold for the 26-year-old centre-back, whose commanding performances in the 2024/25 Ghana Premier League (GPL) season have solidified his reputation as one of Africa’s most promising defenders.

Simpson, who previously debuted for the Black Stars during the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers against Angola and Niger, has been a standout figure for Nations FC, leading the Abrankesie-based club to the top of the GPL table with 54 points as the season nears its climax.

His blend of defensive solidity, leadership, and surprising goal-scoring prowess;netting four goals in 18 appearances, including a sensational 45-yard thunderbolt against Hearts of Oak and a stunning free-kick in a 2-1 victory over Medeama SC has made him indispensable for both club and country.

The Nations FC skipper’s latest call-up, announced on March 14, 2025, comes as no surprise to those who have followed his meteoric rise. Speaking after his selection, Simpson expressed his readiness to represent Ghana:

His confidence is bolstered by a memorable stint with the Black Stars in November 2024, where he earned praise for his composure and tenacity, particularly in an away match against Angola, despite Ghana’s failure to qualify for the 2025 AFCON.

Simpson’s journey to this moment has been one of perseverance. After joining Nations FC from WAFA two seasons ago, he has transformed into a defensive cornerstone, guiding the newly promoted side to a remarkable seventh-place finish in their debut GPL season and now spearheading their title charge.

His performances have not only earned him accolades from Nations FC coach Kassim Mingle Ocansey, who lauded his “proven worth” after the Hearts victory, but also drawn interest from Algerian champions CR Belouizdad, signaling his growing stature in African football.
