Former Ghanaian international Mohammed Polo has harshly criticized the Ghana Football Association (GFA) for keeping Otto Addo as head coach of the Black Stars. Polo described the decision as “mind-boggling” and called on Sports Minister Kofi Adams to investigate the GFA’s rationale.
He believes retaining Addo reflects deeper coaching issues within the team, especially after the Black Stars failed to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
“The Black Stars face a serious problem, and it all boils down to coaching,” Polo told Ghanasoccernet.
“Despite the disappointment in the qualifiers, Otto Addo has been maintained. It’s surprising to keep a coach who couldn’t qualify Ghana for AFCON.
“If you appoint a technical advisor for him, it means the coach is not good enough. We should let him go and allow the technical advisor to take full charge of the team.”
In preparation for the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, the GFA has made significant changes to the Black Stars’ technical setup.
Winfried Schäfer has been appointed as technical advisor, with Desmond Offei joining as assistant coach. Belgian analyst Gregory De Grauwe will head the Video Analysis Unit.
Kris Perquy will provide psychological support, while Issah Amadou and Abdul Rahman Alhassan will serve as equipment officers.
The new technical team will begin their work in March when Ghana faces Chad and Madagascar in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.
