Legendary Ghanaian footballer Mohammed Polo, has spoken out about the issue of inconsistency plaguing the country’s recent football performances.
In an interview with Bryt FM based in Koforidua, the 1978 AFCON winner acknowledged that Ghanaian football has faced challenges in recent years, with a decline in performance since the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.
He noted that there has been a lack of consistency in the national teams’ results, and Ghana hasn’t secured an AFCON title in 41 years.
“We have to accept that for some years now, football is not going on well. Our game took a nosedive after the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, where players fought the FA’s leadership at the time. It’s also being years since Ghana won the AFCON title. Moreover, our youth national teams are not performing in recent times.”
The former Hearts of Oak legend emphasized the importance of establishing a consistent structure in Ghanaian football, starting from the grassroots and extending to the highest levels of the game. He pointed to the need for solid foundations and technical direction.
“Truth be told, there is no consistency in Ghana football because there are no structures. Our major problem is consistency; we need to start from the juvenile football to the top. Despite everything, we still have the opportunity to do something, we just have to raise our technical direction and focus on the philosophy launched by the FA”
Despite the challenges, Polo expressed optimism and placed his faith in the continuity of Kurt Okraku’s leadership at the GFA, hoping that under his guidance, the issues faced by Ghana football can be addressed for the betterment of the sport.
