Nigerian media mogul Mo Abudu is to open EbonyLife Place London in October, creating the United Kingdom’s first cinema hub dedicated exclusively to African and Black films.
The venue, on Wandsworth Road in London, will extend the EbonyLife Place brand beyond Nigeria and is planned as a wider cultural and creative centre celebrating African cinematic culture.
Abudu announced the project on Monday through her social media page, where she also shared a video showing the property. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reported the announcement.
“EbonyLife Place London will become the first cinema in the United Kingdom dedicated exclusively to African and Black films, while also creating a vibrant cultural hub celebrating our fashion, music, food and art,” she said.
The project is intended to offer visitors more than film screenings. Alongside its cinema facilities, the site will include a range of spaces focused on food, music, retail, art and social activity.
“The space will include our Grand Reception, The Afrobeat Restaurant, Fehinti Lounge, Maji Concession & Bar, Zuri Retail and The Living Wall Gallery.”
EbonyLife Place London will therefore bring together several elements of African and Black cultural expression under one roof. Its programme and identity will be centred on African and Black storytelling, while the venue will also provide space to showcase related creative disciplines.
The project follows the development of the EbonyLife Place brand in Nigeria and represents its expansion into the UK. The London venue is being positioned as a destination for culture and entertainment, with cinema at its centre and fashion, music, food and art forming part of the wider offer.
Its opening in October will mark what Abudu describes as the creation of the UK’s first cultural and creative hub dedicated exclusively to African cinematic culture. The venue’s design, including its reception area, restaurant, lounge, concession and bar, retail space and gallery, is intended to create a broader experience for visitors than a conventional cinema.
The announcement places EbonyLife Place London within the growing international reach of African storytelling and entertainment. It will serve both as a cinema focused on African and Black films and as a public space celebrating the wider culture associated with them.
The new site in Wandsworth Road is expected to become the London home of the EbonyLife Place brand when it officially opens in October. Its launch will complete the brand’s move from Nigeria into the UK and establish a dedicated venue for African and Black film, alongside spaces celebrating fashion, music, food and art.
