Mexico is reeling after the country’s most wanted drug lord, Nemesio “El Mencho” Oseguera, was killed in a military operation on Sunday.
El Mencho, leader of the powerful Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), was reportedly killed in Tapalpa, Jalisco, sparking widespread violence and chaos across the state and beyond.
The operation, carried out by Mexican military forces with complementary information from US authorities, resulted in El Mencho’s death, along with four other gang members, and left three soldiers injured.
In response, CJNG members set fire to vehicles, blocked highways, and clashed with security forces in multiple states, including Jalisco, Michoacán, and Guanajuato.
The violence has raised concerns, especially with the 2026 World Cup just three months away, and Guadalajara hosting four matches.
The US State Department has issued a travel advisory, urging citizens to shelter in place in affected areas.
