Spain claimed a second world title with a 1-0 victory after extra time, courtesy of Ferran Torres’ decisive strike, ending Argentina’s bid for back‐to‐back World Cups and denying Messi a historic second winners’ medal.
The result in Sunday’s final also means the 39-year-old has now lost two World Cup finals, following Argentina’s 1-0 defeat by Germany in 2014, and raises fresh questions over whether he will ever feature at another tournament.
Messi reflects on ‘immense pain’ and pride
Messi, who has not yet confirmed his international future ahead of the 2030 World Cup, turned to social media to address the nation and the football world after the loss.
“The pain is immense, and this wound will take time to heal. But I also hold onto all the good things,” he wrote.
“The matches we turned around by giving it our all – moments that will remain in our memories forever – and the support of an entire country which, combined with this group’s hard work and effort, brought us back among the world’s elite once again.
“It is hard to fully appreciate our achievement right now, but this group reached two consecutive World Cup finals.
“Thank you from the bottom of my heart for every greeting and message. Once again, we managed to unite as a country and stand together, sharing the immense pride of being Argentine.
“I also want to congratulate Spain on winning the championship.”
Spain crowned champions, Argentina fall short
Ferran Torres’ goal in extra time settled a tense contest and gave Spain their second World Cup, following their maiden triumph in 2010.
Spain’s defensive resilience proved decisive: they conceded only one goal in the entire tournament, shutting out an Argentina side built around Messi’s creativity and experience.
Argentina were attempting to become only the fourth team to retain the World Cup, having lifted the trophy in 2022. Instead, they were left to rue missed chances and the narrowest of margins in a cagey final.
Messi’s standout tournament ends in heartbreak
Despite the final defeat, Messi delivered another influential World Cup campaign, scoring eight goals and providing four assists as Argentina reached the showpiece match for the third time in the last four editions.
He played a pivotal role in dramatic comeback wins over Egypt and England in the knockout phase, inspiring recoveries that had fuelled hopes of a fairytale ending to his World Cup story.
But Spain, organised and disciplined, ultimately stifled Argentina’s attack and denied Messi the opportunity to add a second world title to his glittering career.
Fernandez: ‘We defended these colors with pride’
Midfielder Enzo Fernandez, who was sent off in second-half stoppage time after receiving a second yellow card for a late challenge on Pau Cubarsi, also posted an emotional message after the match.
He said he and his team-mates had “defended these colors with pride, humility, and commitment”.
“For years, this group has represented us in the best possible way. It teaches that competing isn’t just about winning; it’s about giving your all for the jersey and never giving up,” Fernandez added.
His dismissal came amid a fractious finale, with tempers flaring in the closing moments of extra time and at the final whistle.
Fifa opens disciplinary investigation
Fifa’s disciplinary committee has appointed a disciplinary and ethics prosecutor to investigate altercations between players from both teams after the match.
Footage showed confrontations involving members of both sides as emotions spilled over following the final whistle, prompting world football’s governing body to review the incident.
While Spain celebrate a return to the summit of world football, Argentina and Messi face an uncertain future – and the lingering ache of a final that slipped away by the narrowest of margins.
