Mensah’s time at Sunderland on loan from Olympique Lyon has been riddled by injuries but with meticulous care from the medical team has played four straight game for the club including 72 minutes in their 3-1 win over Birmingham on Saturday.
But his back injury is still a problem and Sunderland manager Steve Bruce said recently that to take care of the problem, Mensah will need to have surgery and sit out of football for a year.
The man widely tipped to captain Ghana at the world cup is hopeful it won’t come to that but is definite that any surgery won’t happen before the world cup.
“I am hoping we can find an option outside surgery but whatever the case is I will play at the world cup. If I need surgery to take care of the problem, it definitely will have to wait till after the world cup”, he told kickoffGhana.com.
Mensah was absent for Ghana as the Black Stars reached the finals of the 2010 Nations Cup but he still remains Milovan Rajevac’s first choice centre-back.
