The Free State Stars player arrived in Kigali on Friday afternoon to augment the Ghana side ahead of their crucial final group game against Rwanda.
His arrival will please those who say the central defensive pairing of Phillip Boanpong and Daniel Addo has looked jittery.
Ghana coach Sellas Tetteh insist there is no guarantee however that Mensah will walk straight back into the side, and says he must assess his fitness before making a decision. But he says the team is now better off with him around, after initially opposing his late arrival.
“The tournament is getting tougher and tougher, so we still need more people, so it is important that he has come,” Tetteh told KickOffGhana.com.
“I believe we need him in the team. Potentially we have about three matches to play, so he will be a major addition.”
Tetteh is also adamant that the pair of Boampong and Addo have done a good job so far.
“I give them a lot of credit because they have played two matches and conceded just one goal. It means they have protected the goalkeeper well. The introduction of Jonathan Mensah should strengthen them, make them sit up, but at this stage, they have done well.”
