Medeama coach Augustine Evans Adotey insisted he was “not down” despite seeing his youthful side blow the chance to go second in Group D of the TotalEnergies CAF Champions League after being held 1-1 by Young Africans.
The Ghanaian outfit went ahead through a Jonathan Mensah penalty and looked on course to capitalise on CS Belouizdad’s stalemate with leaders Al Ahly.
But they were rocked by a second-half Young Africans fightback, leaving Adotey to reflect on what might have been in Kumasi.
“I am not down because football is full of uncertainties,” he philosophised post-match. “We have a young squad with even third tier players.”
Adotey praised his rookie group’s bravery against more seasoned opponents packed with international experience.
“Yanga have more experienced players but my boys fought hard against their quality,” the coach added.
Like Belouizdad, Medeama remain stuck on four points in third – but they still harbour hopes of progressing from the finely poised Group D.
“We wanted to win here to improve our position,” Adotey revealed. “Since that did not happen, we can go to Tanzania next and beat them there.”
Adotey will spend the next 12 days plotting victory in Dar es Salaam as the race for CAF Champions League knockout qualification goes down to the wire.
