Matt Doherty speaks out on Tottenham’s Richarlison signing

Tottenham Hotspur star Matt Doherty has this weekend provided his take on the latest addition to Antonio Conte’s ranks.

The signing in question? Richarlison.

Versatile attacker Richarlison, of course, sealed a move to the Lilywhite half of north London 48 hours ago.

In a series of posts across the club’s website and social platforms, Spurs confirmed that the Brazilian international has put pen to paper on terms in the English capital through the summer of 2027, in a deal worth an alleged £60 million.

Richarlison, of course, takes his talents to England’s capital boasting quite a reputation, on the back of a series of impressive campaigns running whilst on the books of Everton.

In turn, it should come as little surprise to hear of fellow members of Antonio Conte’s ranks at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium making their excitement with the prospect of taking to the pitch alongside the 25-year-old clear.

And, as alluded to above, one such player comes in the form of Matt Doherty.

Speaking to Spurs’ official website this weekend, Republic of Ireland international Doherty was drawn on the talents possessed by his new teammate, having gone toe-to-toe with Richarlison on more than one occasion in the past.

And the full-back went on to lavish praise on Conte’s latest recruit, labelling Richarlison ‘a top-class player’:

“One match that comes to mind was the FA Cup game where he ran a lot and caused us a lot of problems, and that was probably the main reason they beat us in that game and got through.

“He’s a very good player, very difficult to play against and has very good movement. I remember my first game for Tottenham was against Everton at home and he was playing off the left or as a striker so I know the problems that he can cause.

“Whenever you have a player who is right-footed and plays off the left – and I’m just speaking from my personal perspective – when a player can go inside and play as a number 10, can play out wide, can beat a man, it’s the worst thing to play against, so it’s very exciting for us.

“He’s versatile and that means a lot – he can pop up in any position, he’s calm, he keeps the ball well and knows how to find the back of the net. We’ve got a few of those players up front, so having another one now is great. He’s a top-class player and we’re very fortunate to have him now.”
