English-born Ghanaian footballer, Kobbie Mainoo is yet to decide whether he will play for Ghana or England at the senior level, keeping his international options open, the Daily Mail has reported.
The Manchester United midfielder is holding off on making a decision until he is in serious contention to earn “competitive caps”.
Despite representing England’s U-17 and U-19 sides, Mainoo is eligible to play for Ghana through his parents, being born in Stockport.
His impressive performances for Manchester United have caught the attention of England manager Gareth Southgate, who is reportedly eager to call him up for upcoming friendlies against Brazil and Bosnia and Herzegovina.
This move is to fend off interest from Ghana in the young talent. Randy Abbey, a member of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) Executive Council, has expressed the Association’s interest in collaborating with talented players like Mainoo in the future.
Mainoo, 18, has already made a mark at the senior level with Manchester United, scoring his debut goal in a 4-2 FA Cup win over Newport County, and following it up with a stunning winner in a 4-3 victory against Wolverhampton Wanderers.
