Manchester United remain interested in Crystal Palace midfielder Adam Wharton, but their hopes of signing him are being threatened by Crystal Palace’s valuation, renewed interest from Chelsea and continued monitoring by Real Madrid.
United manager Michael Carrick is looking to strengthen his midfield after the departure of Casemiro, while Manuel Ugarte’s injury has reduced his options in the defensive midfield position.
The club have already added Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos during the current transfer window, but Wharton would offer a different profile. The 21-year-old is regarded as a player capable of controlling the tempo of a match, progressing the ball from defence and creating under pressure with his notable left foot.
Sources familiar with the agents’ market, quoted by CaughtOffside, say United’s interest remains active. However, discussions have not accelerated because Crystal Palace are demanding close to €100m for the midfielder.
That valuation represents a significant obstacle for United, who have already spent heavily on strengthening their squad this summer. The club also need to consider further additions in other areas, particularly at striker and left-back, making a major investment in another midfielder a serious financial decision.
Chelsea have emerged as the strongest rival in the race. Recent reports indicate the London club have resumed talks with Crystal Palace, while Wharton remains a priority for manager Xabi Alonso.
Chelsea must also manage their finances before making a commitment of up to €100m. The club are expected to reduce the size of their squad first, but their renewed activity has strengthened Crystal Palace’s position in negotiations. Rather than forcing the selling club to lower its price, Chelsea’s involvement could encourage Palace to maintain or even reinforce its demands.
Real Madrid provide another complication. The Spanish club have been monitoring Wharton for some time, although midfield is not currently among their most urgent priorities. A late move from Real Madrid could nevertheless change the dynamics of the deal and create a three-way contest for the player.
The involvement of Real Madrid could also influence Wharton’s own decision, particularly if the club were to make an offer at an advanced stage of negotiations.
Wharton’s qualities explain why he is attracting interest from some of Europe’s biggest clubs. He is comfortable receiving the ball under pressure, can help his side retain possession in deeper areas and has the vision to break opposition lines with accurate passing.
His arrival could also complement the midfielders already at United. Andrey Santos’ physical qualities, combined with the abilities of Tielemans and Kobbie Mainoo, would give Carrick a broader range of tactical options.
Wharton’s ability to build attacks from the back and dictate the rhythm of games could allow United’s other midfielders to move forward more often and contribute in the attacking third. He is viewed as a potential long-term cornerstone for Carrick’s plans because of his ability to organise play, carry possession and create opportunities from deep.
The central issue for United is therefore not Wharton’s footballing ability but the scale of the possible transfer fee. Paying close to €100m for a new midfielder after significant spending in the same area would represent a substantial commitment, especially with other positions still requiring investment.
United need to balance their desire to secure a player with considerable long-term potential against the risk of exhausting too much of their budget on a single deal. Carrick and his recruitment team cannot spend too long pursuing Wharton, but the club must also avoid being drawn into an uncontrolled bidding contest.
The preferred approach would be to continue applying pressure to complete the transfer while maintaining a clear financial limit. Chelsea’s renewed interest and Real Madrid’s watchful presence mean the situation is likely to develop further, and United may have to decide quickly whether to proceed before the pursuit becomes an open financial battle.
