Man United players want Van Persie to join Erik ten Hag backroom staff

Manchester United players want their former striker Robin van Persie to deputize incoming manager Erik ten Hag.

While ten Hag assistant at Ajax, Mitchell van der Gaag is expected to arrive at Old Trafford too, United wants another assistant who has been involved in the Premier League to help the new man acclimatize to the demands of the English game.

The Times reports that United’s current first-team squad would be keen to see Van Persie return, though there are fears of gaining a work permit while he is without the required qualifications.

Van Persie spent much of his career in England, including eight years at Arsenal after he was brought to the country by Arsene Wenger in 2004.

Signed for United by Sir Alex Ferguson in the summer of 2012, the 38-year-old instantly led the club to the Premier League title in 2013, scoring 26 league goals that season.

It is thought that Van Persie is undecided about the offer with family ties back in Holland at the forefront of his decision-making.

Apart from the Dutchman, former United defender Jaap Stam and Steve McClaren have also been linked with a role under Ten Hag; the latter – who coached at the club under Sir Alex Ferguson – was head coach of FC Twente when Ten Hag was one of his coaches.
