Former President John Dramani Mahama has called on the Interior Minister, Muntaka Mubarak, to ensure that athletes are given preference during recruitment into Ghana’s security services.
His remarks came during a meeting with the Ghana Football Association and members of the Black Queens, who recently secured a bronze medal at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco.
Mahama stressed the importance of creating avenues for gifted sportsmen and women to further develop their talents.
He believes their inclusion in security institutions could enhance their growth while benefiting national sports.
“I have asked the Minister of Interior to give priority to sports people when we do recruitment into the security services.
“In the past, when we brought sports people into the services, it gave them the opportunity and equipment and the facilities to train and improve themselves.
We must re-introduce the Security Services Sports Association (SESSA) games and let the security services compete amongst themselves, and then Kurt (GFA Prez) and co will be standing there, watching and picking the talents and forming the national teams.”
This call comes as the Black Queens celebrate their first WAFCON medal since 2016, once again overcoming South Africa’s Banyana Banyana to claim third place.
Mahama’s proposal could offer more structured pathways for sports talents to thrive both on and off the pitch.
