Paris Saint-Germain manager Luis Enrique substituted Ousmane Dembele at half-time during the 2-2 draw with Rennes, sending a clear message that even the club’s biggest names are not guaranteed a place if their performances fall below expectations.
PSG were 2-0 down at the interval after a poor first-half display, with Dembele struggling to influence the game. Luis Enrique responded by replacing the forward with new signing Ferran Torres, while Mika Godts came on for Khvicha Kvaratskhelia as the Spanish coach attempted to reshape his side.
The changes had an immediate effect. Torres scored twice on his Paris Saint-Germain debut to help the visitors recover from their two-goal deficit and secure a point, avoiding what would have been a surprise defeat by Rennes.
Luis Enrique’s decision to remove Dembele attracted particular attention on the French radio programme After Foot on RMC. Analysts said the substitution demonstrated that reputation and status would not protect any player from being dropped if they failed to deliver the required level of performance.
Programme analyst Walid Acherchour praised the manager’s approach.
“We witnessed another decision from a great manager, as he substituted the Ballon d’Or winner, and perhaps a future winner, at half-time, only to be rewarded with a 2-2 draw. Brilliant management from Luis Enrique,” he said.
Acherchour said the decision to replace both Dembele and Kvaratskhelia while PSG were trailing 2-0 underlined the lack of special treatment within Luis Enrique’s squad. The manager, he suggested, was making it clear to his key players that complacency would not be tolerated.
“When Kvaratskhelia and Dembele are completely below their level in the first half, and then, when you are 2-0 down, you bring on Ferran Torres and Mika Godts, you are sending the message that status is not the most important thing, and if you are not at your best, you are out of the competition,” Acherchour added.
Luis Enrique rejected the idea that the changes were intended as a personal criticism of Dembele or Kvaratskhelia. Instead, he said they reflected his wider philosophy that every player must continually prove their readiness, regardless of previous achievements.
“Paris Saint-Germain have not won anything. If you focus on what you have won before, you will win nothing,” Luis Enrique said after the match.
He added: “The most important thing is that there is no room for complacency. You have to show every day, in every training session and in every match, that you are ready, otherwise it is easy to relax. We are always trying to win, and to keep winning, you have to step outside your comfort zone.”
The Spanish manager also made further changes in midfield as he looked for a response. Fabian Ruiz replaced Joao Neves before Beraldo was introduced for Vitinha.
Those adjustments helped give Paris Saint-Germain a different character after the interval. Having looked disjointed and vulnerable in the first half, they improved after the break and recovered from two goals down to earn a 2-2 draw, with Torres providing the decisive attacking contribution on his first appearance for the club.
