Man United v Liverpool

Sunday, 3:30pm
Premier League match at Anfield, Liverpool
TV: ITV1

Two penalties tells the story of United’s last game at Old Trafford against Everton. They were the difference.

It just feels like they’re getting over the line and doing enough to keep the manager in his job for now, but it’s far from convincing and doesn’t compare with Liverpool, Man City and Arsenal.

And they still managed to give up 23 shots to Everton too. It feels like they’re getting overrun in midfield and allowing all these chances. It must be frustrating because there are some good points to United’s play at the moment. At times you can think they’ve turned the corner, but it’s often one step forward, two steps back.

It is the cup this weekend at home against a big rival though and Erik Ten Hag is obviously working to try to impress the new investors and keep his job next season. A cup run might help him do that. Frankly, I don’t think a cup win would be good enough – and I don’t think many United fans will say it’s good enough either, but it would help make a case in the summer.

They’d have to overcome Liverpool on Sunday and I find it hard to imagine.

The game against City was a cracking match last Sunday. Liverpool’s performance was absolutely incredible. I thought there was no one in the world that could do that to Man City, but they look rattled.

And it’s especially impressive when you see City go one up, but they were hanging on at times in the second half and making mistakes. You just don’t see against anyone.

What a performance by Endo in midfield – he’s been a great signing. And Mac Allister’s back too, Salah should be in on Sunday, and they’ve still got young players in there too, Conor Bradley, Harvey Elliott – they’re kind of like the older ones now they’ve been playing so much recently!

And Quansah was absolutely incredible up against Haaland – as a centre-forward, I’ll pull onto a young defender like him all day because Van Dijk is obviously so dominant, but Haaland didn’t get any joy at all. That’s extraordinary.

They’ll be full of confidence going into this.

United should get up for it too. We saw it against City in the Manchester derby in the first half, but then City demolished them and I can see more of the same on Sunday.

There’ll be a bit of huff-and-puff at the start, but I think they’ll get taken apart by Liverpool in the end. I don’t know if they can even score this time. I could see Liverpool winning 3-0, even at Old Trafford – Liverpool will pick them off.

Luis Diaz – what performance that was against City! That little incident with Rodri and Kyle Walker was great down the left-hand side, and I thought he was just incredible really. His hunger and desire shows he’s a real fighter – and he has so much ability too. I fancy him to get a goal at least on Sunday the way he’s playing.

I think we’d expect some spice in this. It’s a derby, after all, and if Liverpool are the dominant side at Old Trafford you’d expect United, and their fans, to get frustrated. That’ll lead to tackles flying and Casemiro is probably due at least one foul if not more.

United will have to try to put it up to Liverpool as well though. Hojlund is a big miss for them. It puts the focus on the like of Marcus Rashford and Alejandro Garnacho to lead the attack.

Rashford scored that great goal against City and Garnacho’s been one of their best players this season and I could see them getting effort on target as they try to push Liverpool in a losing effort.

Liverpool to win
Luis Diaz to score
Casemiro to commit one or more fouls
Marcus Rashford to have one or more shots on target
Alejandro Garnacho to have one or more shots on target
