Lionesses take on initial favourites in quarter final

Emerging from the group stages as the clear frontrunners to lift the trophy, England will hope to steamroll another opponent and take a vital step towards a Wembley Final.

Standing in their way are a tough opponent Spain. Projected by many to win the tournament, Spain are a foreboding force and will likely be England’s biggest challenge yet after an impressive group stage.

Can the Lionesses get closer to an elusive first title?

We preview the action below.

England are the team to beat

Showing the world just what football and women’s football in particular means to the nation, the England women played one of the best group stages of all time in the Women’s Euros, breaking record after record and asserting themselves as the tournament favourites in some style.

Beating a strong Austria 1-0 in the first fixture, England then smashed world number 11, Norway, out of the park by eight goals to nil before demonstrating how serious they are about winning this title with another thrashing. Their 5-0 victory over home nation neighbours Northern Ireland sees England as the favourites to win the 2022 Women’s Euros, now at 11/4. The Lionesses are 21/20 favourites to make their dominance show against Spain and progress to the semi finals.

England have taken the record for most goals scored by a side in the opening three matches at a Women’s Euros and by some way. Thanks in part to Beth Mead and Alessia Russo, who have already scored eight goals between them, with the two forwards only looking like adding more to their tallies. However, it’s Ellen White along with Russo who goes into this game as the joint-favourite to score first at 9/2, with Mead priced at 5/1. White and Russo are 17/10 to score at anytime, with Mead a 21/10 chance.

Can Spain weather the England storm?

Drawn into the group of death with Germany, Denmark and Finland, Spain were always likely to face some difficulties. Despite a 2-0 loss to Germany in the second fixture, Spain made it to the quarter finals and will likely have brought with them a strong will to survive.

Taking a 4-1 win in their opening game, Spain have shown they know how to score goals and will be the first real threat to an England defence that has not conceded yet at this tournament. A 1-1 scoreline at 5/1, suggests that they will have every chance of taking the Lionesses all the way.

Spain’s dangerous duo of Esther Gonzalez and Amaiur Sarriegi are likely to do the damage and are both priced at 9/4 to score at any time, though the England defence will take confidence from the fact that they are yet to score at the tournament.

Spain have dropped down the favourites list to lift the trophy this year and now find themselves fifth at 6/1.

Losing to a strong Germany, Spain have had their weaknesses exposed when facing the big sides and go into this fixture with a 13/5 chance of progressing to the next round.

It could be a high-scoring affair with the odds at Evens to feature more than 2.5 goals.
