Ghanaian midfielder Lawrence Agyekum has downplayed any notion of rivalry with teammate Abu Francis at Cercle Brugge, describing their relationship as brotherly.
Agyekum joined the Belgian Pro League side from Red Bull Salzburg last summer and quickly settled in, playing alongside Francis, a fellow Ghanaian who has been with the club since 2022.
Agyekum revealed that Francis played a key role in helping him adapt to life in Belgium, saying,
“He told me a lot about the club when I arrived. He really helped me.” Agyekum added,
“When people tend to have their countrymen on the same team, they see it to be a competition but I didn’t see him as that. I saw him as someone who can really help me.”
The pair featured regularly throughout the 2024/25 campaign and are expected to continue their midfield partnership into the new season.
Agyekum has since signed a permanent deal with Cercle Brugge, extending his stay until June 2029. The duo’s strong bond and on-field partnership will likely continue to benefit the team in the future. Their relationship is built on mutual support rather than competition.
