Asante Kotoko striker Kwame Opoku has reportedly been told to find a new club after being informed that he is no longer part of the club’s plans for the 2026-27 season.
The decision is understood to have been communicated by Director of Football Stanley Menzo and head coach Eric Tinkler, according to an exclusive report by Kumasi-based Opemsuo Radio. The report comes amid an allegation of gross misconduct, although no further details about the alleged issue have been made public.
Menzo and Tinkler are said to have advised the 27-year-old forward to look for a new club because they cannot guarantee him a place in the squad they are assembling for the new campaign.
Opoku’s expected departure comes less than 12 months after he returned to Asante Kotoko. He signed a two-and-a-half-year contract with the Porcupine Warriors after leaving Moroccan club Olympique Khouribga.
His second spell in Kumasi was affected by injury during the 2025-26 season. Despite those difficulties, Opoku scored four goals in 16 appearances for the club.
The striker had previously enjoyed a productive first spell with Asante Kotoko during the 2020-21 campaign. He scored six goals and provided three assists in 16 matches, performances which attracted interest from abroad.
That form led to a move to Algerian club USM Alger. Opoku later continued his career in Morocco with Olympique Khouribga before returning to Asante Kotoko on a long-term contract.
He now appears set to leave the club again as Tinkler oversees a reshaping of the squad ahead of the 2026-27 season. The forward is expected to consider offers from elsewhere as he attempts to revive his career and secure regular football.
The reported decision reflects the changes being made at Asante Kotoko as the club prepares its squad for the upcoming campaign. Opoku’s contract had been intended to keep him at the club for two-and-a-half years following his return, but he is now understood to be searching for another destination.
No new club has been identified for the player, and the report does not indicate whether a formal transfer agreement has been reached. For now, his future is uncertain, with Menzo and Tinkler reportedly unwilling to guarantee him a role in their plans.
