GFA President Kurt Edwin Simeon-Okraku has commended the Black Starlets for their resilience and remarkable performance at the WAFU Zone B U-17 Championship, despite narrowly missing out on the title to hosts Ivory Coast.
Ghana’s young team suffered a 4-3 defeat on penalties after a goalless draw in regulation time at the Charles Konan Banny Stadium in Yamoussoukro.
The loss came after an inspiring tournament in which the Starlets showcased their growth and determination, including a standout 2-0 semi-final victory over Nigeria.
Reflecting on their overall performance, President Simeon-Okraku expressed pride in the team’s effort and highlighted their success in qualifying for the continental stage.
“Though the final did not end the way we wanted after a penalty shootout defeat to the host nation, you displayed exceptional character, teamwork, and determination throughout the tournament,” he said.
Ghana’s journey to the final reignited optimism about the future of the country’s youth football, marking their return to the U-17 Africa Cup of Nations after eight years.
Okraku described the achievement as a testament to the Association’s renewed focus on youth development.
“Your qualification for the U17 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco is a significant milestone and a proud moment for our country, marking Ghana’s return to the continental stage after an eight-year absence. This achievement is a clear reflection of the GFA’s vision of ‘Fixing the Fundamentals’ and ‘Power to the Youth.’”
