Kudus set to become Ghana’s most expensive footballer with £55m move to Tottenham

Mohammed Kudus is on the verge of making history as the most expensive Ghanaian footballer of all time, with his imminent £55 million (€64.5 million) move from West Ham United to Tottenham Hotspur.

The 24-year-old Ghana international is scheduled to undergo a medical on Thursday before signing a six-year contract with Spurs. The deal will eclipse the previous record set by Thomas Partey, who joined Arsenal from Atletico Madrid for €50 million (£45 million) in 2020.

Ghana has long been a breeding ground for top-tier football talent, producing iconic figures who have graced the biggest stages in Europe. From midfield powerhouses like Michael Essien to emerging stars like Ernest Nuamah, Ghanaian players have commanded significant transfer fees in recent years. Kudus now stands at the summit of that illustrious list.

Kudus has already made waves in the Premier League following his €43 million move from Ajax to West Ham in 2023. In his debut season, he quickly became a fan favourite in East London, known for his versatility, creativity, and flair in the final third. He scored five goals and provided four assists in 35 league appearances last season.

This latest transfer not only reflects Tottenham’s ambition under Ange Postecoglou but also cements Kudus’ status as one of the most valuable African players on the global market.

Here’s how Kudus now ranks among Ghana’s most expensive footballers (based on reported fees, adjusted as of June 1, 2025):

  1. Mohammed Kudus – £55 million (€64.5 million)
West Ham United to Tottenham Hotspur, 2025
  2. Thomas Partey – €50 million (£45 million)
    Atletico Madrid to Arsenal, 2020
  3. Mohammed Kudus – €43 million (£38 million)
Ajax to West Ham United, 2023
  4. Michael Essien – £24.4 million (€38 million)
    Lyon to Chelsea, 2005
  5. Abdul Rahman Baba – £21.7 million (€26 million)
    Augsburg to Chelsea, 2015
  6. Ernest Nuamah – €25 million (£21 million)
    Nordsjaelland to RWDM/Lyon, 2023

With this record-breaking transfer, Kudus not only elevates his own profile but also adds another milestone to Ghana’s growing influence in elite European football.
