Asante Kotoko’s prolific striker Kwame Opoku has earned a recall to the Ghana national team for the 2025 Unity Cup in London, joining Nations FC’s Razak Simpson and Hearts of Oak’s Benjamin Asare in Otto Addo’s squad.
The 25-year-old, who last featured for the Black Stars in 2021, has been in scintillating form, scoring eight goals in the 2024/25 Ghana Premier League season.
Opoku’s scintillating form in the 2024/25 Ghana Premier League (GPL), where he has netted eight goals and provided three assists in 18 matches, has been pivotal to Kotoko’s title chase, with the Porcupine Warriors sitting second in the league with 50 points.
His standout performances, including a brace in a 3-2 win over Aduana Stars, have rekindled his international prospects. “I was expecting it. I’m delighted to be back and ready to contribute,” Opoku told
“Kwame’s pace and finishing will add firepower,” said coach Addo,
The Unity Cup, a celebration of African football, pits Ghana against arch-rivals Nigeria and Uganda in a round-robin format.
With Ghana coming off a mixed 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign, currently third in Group I with nine points, Addo is using the tournament to blend local talents with foreign-based stars like Thomas Partey and Mohammed Kudus.
Opoku’s inclusion alongside Simpson, who earned his second call-up after a stellar GPL season, and Asare, a rising goalkeeper, highlights the growing influence of home-based players.
