Kotoko striker Frank Mbella eyes Ishmael Addo’s goal record after equalling Eric Bekoe’s 17 goal tally

Asante Kotoko striker Frank Etouga Mbella has set sights on breaking Ishmael Addo’s goal record in the Ghana Premier League after equalling Eric Bekoe’s 17 goal over the weekend.

The Porcupine Warriors suffered a 2-1 defeat at the Aliu Mahama Sports Stadium on Sunday.

Goals from Roland Frimpong and Victor Aidoo gave the home team a two-goal cushion before top scorer Franck Etouga Mbella grabbed a consolation for Kotoko.

Mbella’s goal means he has scored 17 goals in his debut season in the Ghanaian topflight, equaling Bekoe’s record at the club.

Bekoe became Kotoko’s topscorer and the Ghana Premier League top scorer in the 2007/08 season with 17 goals after playing 23 games.

The record lasted for 12 years but has been equalled by the Cameroonian striker who is currently leading the Ghana Premier League top scorers chart with 17 goals after 25 matches.

Mbella is five goals away from Ishmael Addo’s 22 goals he scored in 2001 which is the 4th highest for a single Ghana Premier League season.

During Addo’s spell with Hearts of Oak, he won the 2000 CAF Champions League and 2001 Super Cup, four Ghanaian League League titles (1997–98, 1999, 2000, 2001) and two FA Cups (1999, 2000).

Kotoko despite the defeat sit top of the league summit with 52 points and will host high-flying Legon Cities at the Baba Yara Stadium in the matchday 26 games this weekend.
