Asante Kotoko coach Abdul Karim Zito has hit back at critics after his team’s 1-0 win over Bibiani Gold Stars in the Champion of Champions match.
Following a dismal GHALCA Top 4 campaign where Kotoko lost all three matches, Zito attributed the team’s struggles to their congested schedule.
“I told you before, the Ghalca Tournament, the timing was very bad for us, not for the other clubs,” he said.
Unlike other teams that had time to rest, Kotoko played the FA Cup, President’s Cup, and traveled extensively without adequate breaks.
Zito also cited the team’s premature entry into competitive matches during the pre-season as a factor in their poor performances.
“So, we were in the basic phase of the pre-season… when we started playing matches. So, definitely, I wasn’t expecting something too good from my boys,” he explained.
He noted that most goals scored in the tournament resulted from minor mistakes or set-pieces, indicating that all teams were still finding their footing.
Despite the tough phase, Zito believes his team is improving, saying, “You could see that my boys are now picking, they are now coming.”
