Minister of Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, has praised former Black Stars captains Stephen Appiah and Asamoah Gyan for their vital roles in Ghana’s successful qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Ghana secured their fifth World Cup appearance after a hard-fought 1–0 victory over Comoros on Sunday night at the Accra Sports Stadium a ; result that saw the Black Stars finish top of Group I with 25 points.
Speaking on Asempa FM, Mr. Adams commended the former captains for their continued influence and leadership within the national setup.
“I would like to thank the former captains who are currently with the team. Asamoah Gyan and Stephen Appiah have done a good job,” Adams said. “Stephen Appiah serves as Vice Chairman of the Management Committee, and Asamoah Gyan has been with the team doing a brilliant job. Even Andre Ayew, who has been out for some time, also contributed to this success.”
Ghana’s qualification marks their return to the global stage after missing the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations. The four-time African champions will now prepare for the 2026 tournament, with the group stage draw scheduled for December 5 at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C.
