Despite being way down the pecking order at club level and often in the stands rather than the pitch for Wigan games, Kingston has retained his place as Ghana number one largely because other goalkeepers offered the chance to claim the short have failed to take advantage.
National Under-20 goalkeeper Agyei was the last goalkeeper to stake a claim and the Liberty Professionals man did his reputation no harm with a fine display in the goalless draw in Luanda against Angola.
Kingston is clearly impressed, but knows the world of goalkeepers is a difficult one. “He is a very good goalkeeper. Very aggressive but humble. But he has a lot to do because in a job like this you must continuously work hard. Everyone including myself has to encourage that boy. We have to support him,” Kingston tells KickOffGhana.com.
The Ghana number one also disputes the verdict that there are not many good goalkeepers around now to give him serious competition for his number one shirt.
“We have many goalkeepers but what we have to do is not to conclude too quickly. We need time. It has happened to me but I kept my faith and kept working hard. It is not every goalkeeper who is like me. I am not saying I am a super goalkeeper, I am not saying I am great but if they can be hard when there are mistakes and you know definitely Ghanaians will talk then part of the problem is solved.
“Someone like Daniel Agyei needs support. He needs to be strong. He won’t have a good game every day but when the bad games come he must show good character.”
