Morocco’s women’s national team received a royal welcome from His Majesty King Mohammed VI after finishing as runners-up at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).
The reception, held in Rabat, celebrated the Atlas Lionesses’ heroic campaign on home soil, where they narrowly lost 3-2 to Nigeria in a thrilling final.
Despite leading 2-0 at halftime, Morocco’s dream of lifting their first WAFCON title slipped away in the second half. But their silver medal marks another chapter in what has been an inspiring journey for women’s football in the country.
Since 2019, Morocco has embarked on an ambitious transformation of the women’s game; introducing a national league structure, investing in youth and grassroots development, and supporting clubs with both funding and technical expertise. The results have been profound.
The Atlas Lionesses now have back-to-back WAFCON finals appearances (2022 and 2024), a World Cup knockout stage qualification in 2023, and strong showings at youth levels, with both the U17 and U20 teams reaching FIFA World Cups.
