Kevin-Prince Boateng progressed to the knockout phase of the UEFA Champions League after Schalke completed the double over FC Basel on Wednesday. The Ghanaian international was in the thick of affairs as the Germans coasted to a 2-0 win over the Swiss side. Schalke took advantage of questionable refereeing decisions to beat 10-man Basel and advance to last 16 of the Champions League. Basel finished third in Group E and will play in the Europa League. Schalke joined group winner Chelsea in the knockout stage of the Champions League. Julian Draxler put Schalke ahead in the 51st and Joel Matip secured the victory in the 57th — but was clearly offside, along with three other Schalke players. But the flag stayed down and the goal stood. Basel defender Ivan Ivanov was sent off in the 31st in a harsh decision by referee Paolo Tagliavento. Ivanov pulled down Adam Szalai just outside the area. Schalke’s Benedikt Hoewedes escaped with a yellow card for a similar foul only minutes earlier. Earlier on Wednesday, Kwadwo Asamoah suffered elimination from the competition after Juventus went down 1-0 at Galatasary.

CK Akunnor has warned Ghana to be wary of the USA at the 2014 World Cup just like the other Group G opponents; Germany and Portugal.

The Black Stars will be facing old foes in Germany and USA at the group stage of next year’s tournament being staged in Brazil.

Ghana will also come up against the talented Portugal team led by Real Madrid star and acclaimed current best player in the world Cristiano Ronaldo.

A lot of the attention is being focused on the European giants within Ghana’s group with USA relegated to the background.

Many argue the USA will be a relatively easier opponent considering Ghana’s superior record against them at the World Cup finals.

The Black Stars have twice been responsible for America’s exit from the finals – first at the group stage of the 2006 World Cup in Germany and then a famous Round of 16 win at the quarter final stage four years later in South Africa.

But former Ghana captain CK Akunnor wants similar attention and respect paid to the Americans regardless of Ghana’s superior record against them.

“A lot of the focus is on Germany and Portugal and I can understand that – they are the biggest sides,” he told Radio Gold.

“But we also have the USA to play and it appears no one is talking about them.

“They are also a good side and they will be determined not to lose to is for the third time at the World Cup.

“So as we look at Germany and Portugal, we should also do same about USA because after all, they I’ve also qualified to the World Cup.”

Ghana will open its campaign at the World Cup against USA before playing Germany and then Portugal.
