Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has, on Thursday, provided his take on long-standing pleas for fresh blood in his midfield setup ahead of the new season.
Those of a Reds persuasion, of course, will be fully aware of the situation in the club’s engine room ranks.
With Thiago Alcantara a constant injury concern, Harvey Elliott fresh off a lengthy spell on the sidelines, and both James Milner and, to a lesser extent, Jordan Henderson getting on in years, the Anfield faithful, heading into the summer, were desperate for the club to sanction a move for at least one proven midfield option, to add to one area of Klopp’s squad deemed as not up to scratch.
It has long been made clear in the media, however, that the trio of Darwin Nunez, Fabio Carvalho and Calvin Ramsay will mark the only reinforcements to Liverpool’s playing ranks with a view to the new campaign.
Speaking to the media whilst his side go about ramping up their pre-season preparations on Thursday, it therefore came as little surprise when the subject of the Reds’ options in the middle of the park was put to Jurgen Klopp.
The German, however, remained defiant in his response.
“How I said, if nobody wants to leave – and no player came to me with that request yet and I don’t expect it really, to be honest,” Klopp began.
“There is no need for a new midfielder. We cannot just add on midfielders. We respect the contracts with our boys as well, that means as long as we signed them they get all our support.”
