German-Ghanaian defender Joshua Quarshie marked his Southampton debut with a solid display as the Saints battled from behind to claim a 2-1 victory over Wrexham in their English Championship opener at St. Mary’s Stadium.
The 21-year-old centre-back, a summer signing from Hoffenheim, was handed his first appearance for the club on Saturday and played a key role in their dramatic late turnaround.
Wrexham took the lead in the 22nd minute through England forward Josh Windass’ penalty and held the advantage until the final moments.
But Southampton, determined to push for a quick return to the Premier League, rallied in stoppage time.
Ryan Manning levelled in the 90th minute before Jack Stephens struck in injury time to seal all three points for the hosts.
Quarshie, who signed a contract running until the summer of 2029, will be hoping his debut performance cements his place in the starting lineup for the season ahead.
