Assistant coach of the Ghana national football team, John Paintsil, has underscored the high expectations surrounding Ghana as they prepare for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The four-time African champions are set for their fifth appearance at the global showpiece, co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Their qualification has reignited optimism among supporters, particularly after missing out on the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations — the first absence in over two decades.
Reflecting on Ghana’s World Cup journey, Paintsil admitted that previous group-stage exits at the 2014 and 2022 tournaments were disappointing but believes the accumulated experience now places the team in a stronger position.
“When it comes to the World Cup, Ghana is now experienced. We have been to the round of 16 in 2006 and the quarter-finals in 2010,” Paintsil told 3Sports.
“Coming into this World Cup, the expectation is very high. I can’t wait to see how things will go on our side.”
The former Fulham Football Club and West Ham United Football Club defender also stressed the importance of player fitness ahead of the tournament.
“Like I keep saying, I want all our players to be fit, so they’ll be ready for the call-up.”
Ghana have been drawn in Group L and will open their campaign against Panama national football team on June 17, before facing England national football team on June 23 and concluding the group stage against Croatia national football team on June 27.
As part of preparations, the Black Stars are scheduled for friendly matches against Austria national football team and Germany national football team in March, followed by a clash with Mexico national football team before the tournament kicks off.
