In the aftermath of Ghana’s disappointing Africa Cup of Nations campaign, former Black Stars defender John Paintsil has pinpointed the lack of unity as a major factor contributing to the team’s poor performance.
Speaking on UTV’s United Showbiz, Paintsil expressed his belief that the players were unfortunate, emphasizing the absence of leadership qualities throughout the team. “The players were unlucky,” he stated. “But we also lacked leadership quality. This is from the top, from the technical team, and when you are working with such players, you have to stand up with your game.”
Highlighting the team’s disunity, Paintsil noted the deficiency in collective effort and cited the importance of players taking responsibility for the outcome. “There was so much individual brilliance, and they did not play as a team,” he added.
Drawing comparisons to the successful era he was a part of, Paintsil reminisced about the strong bond that characterized the Black Stars during his time. “During our time, we could predict the scoreline before the game. There was respect and unity in our team.”
In the quest for improvement, Paintsil urged the current players to take accountability and work towards fostering a cohesive and united team, echoing the essence of teamwork that defined the glory days of Ghanaian football.
