Joe Gomez leaves St. Mary’s on crutches

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp confirmed that defender Joe Gomez sustained an injury in their Tuesday night win over Southampton.

The defender has been relegated to the bench for the most part of the season with Klopp preferring Matip and Konate to partner Van Dijk at the heart of his defence; Gomez is always forced to play as cover at right-back.

Speaking after the game, Klopp confirmed that the player sustained a bad injury during the first half of the game and was in pain.

“I hope we are lucky. Joe himself has pain but not too much. He got, one time, a real shock to the system, but he is sitting in the dressing room and when I spoke to him he was in a good mood. I think maybe we were probably lucky but we have to figure that out,” Klopp said.

Following the game, the Athletic’s James Pearce also provided an update: ‘Joe Gomez leaving St Mary’s on crutches with his left foot in a protective boot’.

The player is just coming back from a serious injury and will be hoping that the latest setback isn’t serious as he aims to get more game time. There have been reports that he might move to Fulham in the summer to increase his chances of making the England squad for the 2022 World Cup.
