Black Queens defender Josephine Bonsu says stepping onto the Accra Sports Stadium pitch for the first time in her career felt surreal as she soaked in the cheers of the home crowd.
The Germany-based player, who joined the national team setup ahead of the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco, had never played in Ghana until the Queens’ 4-0 demolition of Egypt in the 2026 WAFCON Qualifiers on October 28.
Bonsu admitted that the experience left her speechless.
“It means a lot [to come here and represent Ghana]. When I was walking through the tunnel and to the pitch, and then I saw the fans, I was like, ‘Is this here in real life?’ It was loud, and it wasn’t too many people, to be honest, because the stadium is huge,” she said.
She described the moment as a dream come true, saying the energy from the fans made her emotional during parts of the match.
“The atmosphere was just outstanding, and in the middle of the game, sometimes, I was just looking around and just enjoying, so this is a dream and we have to enjoy every moment.”
Bonsu also reflected on what it means to wear the national colours, especially for her family.
“It’s also a dream when you start playing football; it’s a dream to play for the national team. I am just giving back to my father and now for this period; the four to five months that I have been here it’s been crazy,” she added.
Having helped Ghana to a bronze medal finish at the 2024 WAFCON, Bonsu is now eyeing a deeper run when the team returns to the continental stage next year.
The upcoming 2026 WAFCON in Morocco doubles as a qualifier for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil, a target the Queens are determined to achieve.
